Elizabeth McMurtry is an artist, writer, and textile enthusiast living in the Pacific Northwest.
McMurtry began learning handcrafts in earnest after dropping out of a prestigious conceptional fine arts program, where craft was a four letter word. She began attending community center ceramics classes, where a fellow student taught her to knit. Soon after she learned to operate a sewing machine, and nearly immediately began making quilts. Over a decade later, McMurtry’s work, while predominantly centered on traditional quilt making, spans multiple mediums, and aims to marry materiality and functionality (or lack thereof) with narrative and context.
Her fiber drawings series, begun in 2007, are one-of-a-kind pieces that are part of that larger body of conceptual work which includes writing, textile work, mending, and mark making.
